STARBURST On March 2, 2012 a new active region on the sun, region 1429, rotated into view. It has let loose two M-class flares and one X-class so far. The M-class flares erupted on March 2 and on March 4. The third flare, seen above, rated an X1, peaked at 10:30 ET on March 4. A coronal mass ejection accompanied each flare, though due to the fact that this active region is still off to the side of the sun, they will likely have a weak effect on Earth’s magnetosphere. The M class flare on March 4 also came with what’s called a Type IV radio burst that lasted for about 46 minutes. Sending out broadband radio waves, these bursts can occur towards the end of a solar flare and are believed to be created by moving electrons trapped in great, looping magnetic fields left over from the initial flare. “Lately, the word “curate” seems to be used in a greater variety of contexts than ever before, in reference to everything from a exhibitions of prints by Old Masters to the contents of a concept store. The risk, of course, is that the definition may expand beyond functional usability. But I believe ‘curate’ finds ever-wider application because of a feature of modern life that is impossible to ignore: the incredible proliferation of ideas, information, images, disciplinary knowledge, and material products that we all witnessing today. Such proliferation makes the activities of filtering, enabling, synthesizing, framing, and remembering more and more important as basic navigational tools for 21st century life. These are the tasks of the curator, who is no longer understood as simply the person who fills a space with objects but as the person who brings different cultural spheres into contact, invents new display features, and makes junctions that allow unexpected encounters and results.

To curate, in this sense, is to refuse static arrangements and permanent alignments and instead to enable conversations and relations. Generating these kinds of links is an essential part of what it means to curate, as is disseminating new knowledge, new thinking, and new artworks in a way that can seed future cross-disciplinary inspirations. But there is another case for curating as a vanguard activity for the 21st century.”

“One big disconnect, the study notes, is how the amount of ad spending going towards digital does not reflect the amount of time consumers invest in those areas. “Mobile, for example, has a more than 10% share of adults’ media time each day, but less than 1% of ad dollars,” eMarketer estimated. The firm also noted that paper-based newspapers and magazines commanded ad dollars “far ahead of their importance in consumers’ day.””

“If you don’t interact with an audience, you will lose it. The industry is so intent on computerizing the operation and removing the human element they’ve lost contact with the listeners. I don’t want to hear John Tesh or some other jock doing voice tracks from Timbucktoo (sp) reading a bunch of sound bites from an internet site….I can do that. Have a good personality, stay in touch with the audience using what the audience uses…be it Facebook, Twitter, or 2 tin cans and a string. I remember when the phone was the major communications tool (other than the broadcast itself) STAY PLUGGED IN!”
